Application for the 2025 University of Sussex Stuart Hall Scholarship is now open for international students passionate about pursuing their PhD program in the United Kingdom. This offer is available for every graduate, regardless of the country of their origin. As a fully funded opportunity, the University of Sussex Stuart Hall Scholarship will allow students to study in the UK with benefits that include a full scholarship and £24,237 annual stipends.

University of Sussex Scholarship 2025 Requirements:

To apply for the 2025 University of Sussex Scholarship, interested candidates must: 

  • Have or expect to obtain a minimum 2:1 degree from a recognized university.
  • Be new students starting in Autumn 2025
  • Being from a Black British background
  • Qualify for Home fees
  • Be candidates whose proposed research addresses social justice issues and can contribute to addressing barriers and discrimination facing marginalized groups.

Stuart Hall Scholarship 2025 Duration and Reward

Fees covered will include:

  • A maintenance allowance for 4 years at UKRI levels (currently at £19,237)
  • UK PhD fees for 4 years, or 1 year Masters + 3 years PhD fees
  • Up to £3000 in research and fieldwork costs.
  • Access to Stuart Hall Foundation resources and networks, including the annual gathering of scholars and fellows.

Selection Criteria

Selection is based on:

  • Academic background and/or relevant experiential learning.
  • A strong research proposal addressing social justice and marginalization.
  • Panel review by Directors of Doctoral Study in relevant schools.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed, and final selection will be made by the Stuart Hall Foundation.

How To Apply for the University of Sussex Stuart Hall Scholarship 2025

To apply for the University of Sussex Stuart Hall Scholarship, interested and qualified candidates should:

  • First, you must apply for a PhD place at Sussex on our online portal. 
  • Then you can submit a scholarship application (download from the document link at the bottom of this page) written in a way that can be understood by a non-specialist to the Sussex Researcher School pgr-scholarships@sussex.ac.uk. 
  • Shortlisted candidates will be notified after the closing date.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be notified after the closing date.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview before a final shortlist is provided
    to the Stuart Hall Foundation.
  • The Stuart Hall Foundation will then make the final selection of the
    successful applicant
