Jamb Cut-Off

Jamb Cut-Off Mark For Medicine & Surgery 2024-2025

Jamb Cut-Off is simply a way of ensuring the best students get admission. Each year, aspirants, also known as jambites, juttle for a space in the most competitive course at the university. The most competitive courses are medicine and surgery, which have given headaches to aspirants, especially with the high cut-off marks usually assigned to them.

This year, JAMB has announced how admission to public universities will be given, including their Jamb Cut-Off. Interestingly, the Medicine and Surgery JAMB-approved cut-off score is 280, showing the high level of competition for admission to any Nigerian university that offers this discipline. Over 25,000 people apply to 37 different institutions’ medical and surgical programs each year. Still, only about 5,000 applications get through.

Getting a score that is noticeably higher than the cutoff is necessary to improve one’s chances of getting admitted. For example, the University of Lagos received 7,216 applications for its Medicine and Surgery program in 2016, indicating that it is a very competitive school.

Summary of what Jamb Cut-Off signifies

Jamb Cut-Off, especially for medical students, is simply a way of ensuring admission for the students who have performed very well in the UTME against those who may not have performed very well. It is more of a way of partially screening and letting those who have excellent academic background gain admission on merit.

Jamb Cut-Off indicates how competitive gaining admission can be. Without the JAMB Cut-Off, students may struggle as some students who should have not had the opportunity to have a second chance in writing their post-UTME exam will then have another chance to excel in the exam. It is really important to have a score without or above the Jamb Cut-Off as an aspirant. Some schools will also have cut-off marks that are higher than that set by JAMB.
